When Should You Seek Counselling?

When Should You Seek Counselling?

Counselling, or therapy as some people may know it, has so many benefits once you decide to take that step. While you may seek counselling when something is happening in your life that you need help with, you can also attend when you just want someone to talk with.

If you are seeking counselling for mental health issues, the improvements you will see will not only benefit your mental state but other parts of your life as well. Therapy is a very personal adventure and you should not be ashamed of taking that step. In fact, one in five Canadians goes to therapy each year!

You may be questioning if you could benefit from counselling. If you are, here are some ways to tell:

Loss of motivation

A loss of motivation can come from a few different things. Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can lead to tasks feeling very difficult to complete. If you find yourself sleeping more or less, losing the drive to see friends and family, and just an overall loss of excitement, you may want to reach out to a trusted family member or therapist.

Persistent worry

While worrying is normal, constant worrying may stop you from living your life to the fullest. You may find yourself thinking of situations that are unlikely to happen. This may be a sign of anxiety and talking to a therapist will help you gain control of those thoughts.

Harmful thoughts

Suicidal thoughts, harmful thoughts, or any type of self-harm should be taken very seriously. In cases like this, you can put trust in a loved one and seek help immediately. You can also reach out to your primary care doctor to get further help.

Feelings of loneliness

Dealing with mental health issues can be isolating on their own. You may feel alone even though that’s not the case. Talking to a therapist can help you in realizing that you do have someone to talk to, and more importantly, who understands.

Substance abuse

Using substances such as alcohol and drugs will only temporarily help what you’re going through. If you’re suffering from a mental health issue, chances are these substances are making what you’re feeling more prominent. It’s best to seek therapy and talk out your feelings rather than turning to a coping mechanism.
